At Positive Life Kenya, we are committed to empowering youth through the "Breaking the Silence Phase II" project, a critical initiative aimed at strengthening Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) while fostering sustainable community structures through active civic engagement. Building on the achievements of our earlier CISU-funded project, this phase focuses on equipping young people with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for their SRHR and engage in civic activities that impact their lives. We provide life skills education and create supportive environments where youth can discuss the challenges they face, make informed decisions, and navigate their reproductive health with greater awareness. The urgency of this work cannot be overstated. In 2020, adolescents aged 10-19 accounted for 15% of all new HIV infections, underscoring the critical need for comprehensive SRHR education. By continuing to empower youth through education and civic engagement, we aim to break down barriers, improve reproductive health outcomes, and support young people in shaping healthier futures for themselves and their communities. Recognizing Kenya’s significant youth bulge, where over half the population is under 35, our project seeks to harness this demographic potential by offering a non-judgmental, safe space for youth expression. Through peer-to-peer engagement and youth-led advocacy, we ensure that young people are at the forefront of decisions affecting their health, well-being, and future, firmly believing in the principle of "Nothing for us without us."

Positive Life Kenya (PLK) has been at the forefront of supporting HIV-positive community members and their families in Mlolongo, a densely populated transit town near Nairobi for over a decade. Mlolongo’s atmosphere, influenced by its proximity to the capital and an influx of laborers from neighboring counties, has made it a hotspot for the sex trade and the consequent spread of HIV and other opportunistic infections. The town’s rapid growth has also led to the proliferation of slums and low-cost settlements, fostering crime, drug and substance abuse, human trafficking, and commercial sex work as survival strategies for the economically marginalized.
In response to these challenges, PLK, with long-term funding from the Stephen Lewis Foundation, has expanded its efforts beyond HIV care. The organization has implemented a holistic approach, raising awareness about human and civil rights, offering skill-based programs for youth and women, and advancing child protection, support, and advocacy. These initiatives are driven by a vision to build families with dignity, free from disease and poverty.
PLK's comprehensive interventions aim to reduce the impact of HIV and empower the community, particularly women and youth, through education, economic opportunities, and support systems. By addressing the root causes of poverty and vulnerability, Positive Life Kenya strives to create sustainable change in Mlolongo, ensuring that families can thrive in a healthier and more equitable environment.
Empower Yourself, Transform Your Community - funded by Iris Soto
The Self-Love and Leadership Empowerment Certification Initiative is a transformative 12-week program designed to uplift women by nurturing self-love, fostering self-care, and developing essential leadership skills. Through a combination of educational content, experiential activities, and practical leadership opportunities, this program aims to empower women to take charge of their lives and make a positive impact in their communities.
Over 12 weeks, participants will engage in weekly sessions filled with activities like journaling, role-playing, and leadership exercises. They will explore themes such as embracing inner strength, setting boundaries, and practicing gratitude. The program concludes with a community project or the creation of a women’s circle, enabling participants to apply their newfound skills in real-world settings. By the end of this program, participants will be not only be equipped to lead but will also inspire others to embark on their own journeys of self-love and empowerment. Let’s create a ripple of change together.
Promoting Oral Hygiene and Health in Vulnerable Communities - funded by Kasia
Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, we are raising awareness and promoting the importance of oral hygiene in some of the most vulnerable communities. In collaboration with our team, a dentist is conducting informative sessions in schools and within slum communities, emphasizing the significance of oral care, prevention, and self-care practices. These sessions not only educate but also provide essential materials, which are often unaffordable for many families. This crucial initiative is making a significant impact by promoting health and prevention from an early age in communities where access to clean water, nutritious meals, and medical care is often lacking. Through this project, hundreds of children and women have learned how to use the right tools to maintain proper oral hygiene and prevent harmful infections and diseases that are difficult to treat in such challenging environments. This project is just the beginning. Our volunteers will continue to play a key role as we expand our efforts, planning door-to-door visits and additional school sessions to reach individuals who, in many cases, have never been examined by medical professionals. Our goal is to provide ongoing support and education, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the knowledge and resources to take care of their health.

Hear Our Voices was a project by Positive Life Kenya, in partnership with 100% for Children and funded by CISU. It targeted young people, particularly women, in Machakos County, empowering them to participate in civic and political processes with a focus on sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR). Implemented before and during the 2022 General Elections, the project aimed to boost voter participation among young women, ensure their safety at election polls, and hold elected officials accountable for SRHR policies. Through civic education and conflict resolution training, the initiative strengthened female youth visibility in elections, promoted rights mobilization, and fostered youth-led activism for gender equality and SRHR.

The Made by Women for Women project was implemented by PLK in partnership with 100% for the Children and funded by CISU. It aimed to empower vulnerable women and adolescent girls in Machakos County by strengthening PLK’s female entrepreneurship program. The initiative addressed economic challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on fostering female-led economic activities and social justice. Key components included training 50 women to produce biodegradable menstrual cup bags for international markets, introducing HEVEA menstrual cups while addressing related health and hygiene concerns, and engaging 500 adolescent girls and 150 women from local communities in educational activities. Collaborations and knowledge sharing with partners enhanced the project's impact, promoting economic resilience, responsible environmental practices, and social justice.
