To volunteer, you must be at least 18. This minimum age requirement ensures that you are mature and ready for the responsibilities involved, and we are happy to support an intergenerational exchange between volunteers and staff, too. If you are not 18, you can come with yoru parents or an adult.
You should strongly desire to challenge yourself, step out of your comfort zone, and be ready to face new challenges. Volunteering often requires flexibility and a willingness to adapt, so being open to new experiences is vital. You can count on the support of those who share this experience with you.
A natural inclination to connect with people is essential for effectively engaging with others. If you are curious and adaptable, you are ready to face challenges and approach unexpected situations as opportunities for growth.
A solid grasp of English is required, as it will be crucial for communication. This will allow you to effectively collaborate with team members and interact with the local community.

Our accommodation is at Faraja, our vocational center, where you’ll interact with local youths and women in our programs. Rooms accommodate 1 to 9 people, depending on your arrangement. Accommodation is essential, and a bed, blanket, and mosquito net are provided. There’s a bathroom with a toilet and running water. Breakfast and dinner are served at Faraja, and lunch is packed based on the day’s activities.
Water and electricity are available at both Faraja House and the office. We recommend bringing bottled water, but you can use the water from the house for showers and washing clothes. Electricity is available for charging your devices.
PLK provides free Wi-Fi at the office. For broader coverage, we suggest buying a local SIM card from Safaricom. Wi-Fi is available at Faraja House for 1000 shillings per week.
Bringing a laptop or iPad is helpful for work and leisure. Make sure your travel insurance covers any valuable items like these. A camera or a good mobile phone is also recommended to capture the beautiful moments and scenery you'll experience.
Women should wear tops that cover the shoulders and bottoms that reach at least knee-length to avoid unwanted attention. Bring comfortable clothing suitable for warm and cold weather, as conditions vary. Remember, you’ll be playing with kids and navigating sometimes muddy streets, so choose easy-to-wash and practical clothes.
We mainly walk in the Mlolongo area, but public transportation, such as matatus (minivans) and motorbikes, is common and reliable. You can also use Uber or regular taxis. It’s wise to carry some cash, as public transport and taxis usually only accept cash payments. Usually, we walk to the office from Mlolong to Kitcheko slums; it is a pleasant 40-minute walk to start the day well.
Kenyan Shillings (KES) are the local currency. It’s best to have some KES before you arrive, though there are ATMs near the office for withdrawals. Local shops and restaurants don’t typically accept credit cards, so cash is essential. You should budget around 400€ or $450 US per month for accommodation, meals, transportation, and extra for any additional activities like safaris.
Positive Life Kenya has operated in various areas since 2010, including the interiors of the slums, where personal safety is a shared responsibility. Nairobi is a large city, so we recommend exploring in small groups or with at least one other volunteer. As in any big city, be mindful of pickpockets, but also take time to enjoy the many activities and sights the area offers. The locals are friendly and helpful, so just be aware of your surroundings and avoid drawing attention with flashy outfits or jewelry.
For your safety, it’s essential to register with your embassy upon arrival in Nairobi. This simple process involves filling out some forms and providing your local address. Registration ensures that your home country can assist you in emergencies like natural disasters or political events. Embassies are located within Nairobi, about 20 minutes to an hour away by taxi or public transport.
While Kenya does not require mandatory vaccines, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor before traveling. The risk of malaria is low in Nairobi, but it’s still present, so we advise taking precautions like anti-malaria pills, insect repellent, and covering up at night. If you plan to visit coastal areas, be aware that malaria risk is higher, and extra precautions are necessary.
We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance before leaving your home country. Nairobi and the surrounding areas have a variety of hospitals and clinics, with significant hospitals available for more severe issues. Remember that most travel insurance policies require you to pay for medical services upfront and submit claims for reimbursement later. Be sure to keep all receipts if you need medical attention.
